Why shouldn’t I say trans*?

dirtybrian:

Using the asterisk after trans* seems inclusive until you actually look at its history and what trans women and nonbinary people are saying about it. Here are some links about the nonbinary erasure and transmisogyny.

EDIT: @b-binaohan brought to my attention the original posts that I couldn’t find when I first made this post, so I’m belatedly editing to add what I’ve now been informed is the first post about this subject:

http://b.binaohan.org/blog/on-transasterisk/

To learn more, you can read the links from this post.

FURTHER EDIT: the link is now dead but I saved most of the original links, so I’m listing the ones I saved and found below:

My original links:

All links (except to b-binaohan) go to posts on my own blog so they won’t go dead like the links in the last link-gathering post I saw on this.

In short, trans women/transfeminine people, TPOC, and IAOPOC have asked we not use this symbol, except in referring to our own selves (as an identity) and not a community or group of people.

stop using the asterisk after trans. it was created to include people who arent even trans (like cis drag queens) and if you use it because you think it’s more inclusive of nonbinary people, you’re implying that nb people aren’t really trans

here are a couple of explanations
if necessary

aaaaaaah!!! okay this is rull helpful thank you

Hey!!

This is really important!!

Right now, this project needs help with funding.

If you haven’t heard of it already, this is a kickstarter for a transgender comedy where the characters are played by actual trans people and the show touches on issues important to the community!

But this kickstarter still needs funding!!!

Please, if you can, donate and/or signal boost this and make this show a reality!
