Why shouldn’t I say trans*?
Using the asterisk after trans* seems inclusive until you actually look at its history and what trans women and nonbinary people are saying about it. Here are some links about the nonbinary erasure and transmisogyny.
EDIT: @b-binaohan brought to my attention the original posts that I couldn’t find when I first made this post, so I’m belatedly editing to add what I’ve now been informed is the first post about this subject:
http://b.binaohan.org/blog/on-transasterisk/
To learn more, you can read the links from this post.
FURTHER EDIT: the link is now dead but I saved most of the original links, so I’m listing the ones I saved and found below:
- the asterisk has been policed to exclude trans women
- why do we need to refer to all trans people at once?
- cis people use it out of habit and it doesn’t actually force them to acknowledge nonbinary people. you can be prejudiced and erase nonbinary people while purporting to talk about “trans* people”. also binarist. just read this link it’s a long discussion with a lot in it.
- broken (until I can find another version)
- broken (until I can find another version)
My original links:
- It is used to degender trans women, exclude nonbinary people, and was popularized by a white cishet guy who profited off it
- It is used by truscum to exclude nonbinary people from the trans community
- It is specifically transmisogynistic and excludes trans women from the trans community
- It is superfluous and this post describes a whole lot of problems.
- It is overinclusive and can include cis people when they really shouldn’t be included
- It makes nonbinary people feel less trans, which can be a factor in dysphoria and internalized transphobia
- note that a link that went to n*talie reed’s blog is removed because I have been informed that she is a white supremacist! please don’t reblog this link if you were here from the original version of this post.
All links (except to b-binaohan) go to posts on my own blog so they won’t go dead like the links in the last link-gathering post I saw on this.
In short, trans women/transfeminine people, TPOC, and IAOPOC have asked we not use this symbol, except in referring to our own selves (as an identity) and not a community or group of people.
