Jeremy Corbyn has challenged Theresa May to allow people to self-identify as transgender without having to go through medical checks, pledging that Labour would support any government attempt to change the law.
…
But Corbyn said May would have his support if she scrapped the requirement for trans people to undergo medical tests, and instead allowed them to self-identify their gender, saying legislation could be passed with Labour backing if the Tories and DUP had a free vote.
“Discrimination has gone on too long. The Gender Recognition Act does not allow trans people to self-identify their gender and forces them to undergo invasive medical tests. This is wrong,” he said.
“Labour recognised this in our manifesto, pledging to update the act. Theresa May told Pink News that ‘changes need to be made’ but failed to include anything on this in the Conservative manifesto.
“So, I say to her today, Labour will help you keep your promise. Bring forward a bill to update the act and improve trans rights and Labour will back you. You can give your MPs and the DUP a free vote and Labour will make it law.”
There is no mention in the article of legal recognition of nonbinary genders, which is disappointing. I am a little nervous of a shoving-us-under-the-bus situation, even though this would be a hugely positive step for binary trans people.
“The
program information gives an interview with Dr Kenneth Zucker, who the
documentary filmmakers say ‘lost his job for challenging the new
orthodoxy that children know best’.
In fact, Zucker lost his job
after being hit with allegations of psychological abuse against minors.
His ‘techniques’ were aimed to ‘repair’ the ‘biological’ gender, and
told parents to discard of ‘feminine toys’. The Canadian ‘doctor’ was
discredited, disgraced and the gender clinic issued an apology to the
more than 500 pre-pubescent youth who came into contact with him since
he started practicing in the 1970s.”
Transgender, nonbinary and intersex activists in Toronto would appreciate any and all help in circulating this information, re-centering the narrative on the marginalized people being effected by these events, demanding accountability from the University of Toronto, and taking steps to reduce the harm done to our community.
This is an open letter I’ve written in regards to the recent controversy
at the University of Toronto surrounding Jordan Peterson and the use of
gender-neutral pronouns. For those who are uninformed or potentially
misinformed about these events, I highly encourage you to read this
letter, and would appreciate it being circulated on social media.
This issue is severely impacting transgender, nonbinary and intersex people in Toronto and the media is not paying attention to our stories. Please do what you can to get this out. Thank
you.

An update on the ongoing situation in Toronto surrounding the transphobic professor at the University of Toronto and subsequent protest demonstrations [1, 2, 3, 4]. This is a speech that was given at what was called a “Freedom of Speech” rally, held in support of professor Jordan Peterson and as a counter-protest to the trans-inclusive teach-in that took place at the same venue the previous week.
Organizers in Toronto are asking for this video to be circulated to spread awareness of the vile and hateful rhetoric that transgender students are being subjected to at the University of Toronto.
The University of Toronto is planning to host a debate about the validity of transgender rights with Jordan Peterson on Saturday November 11th, to give further platform and validation to the man who has sparked so much hostility and hatred towards transgender staff and students at this institution.
Activists are calling for a boycott event, and we encourage transgender, nonbinary and intersex people and allies to take to social media to let people know that our rights and our humanity are #NotUpForDebate

This article is the only one I’ve read so far out of the ones my partner got from the U of T medical library. It was completely eye-opening and explores the correlation between the medicalization/pathologization of homosexuality, bisexuality and gender variance and the rise of normalizing surgeries in intersex infants.
A very important and relatively short read that I heavily encourage intersex people as well as dyadic LGBT people to read.
