Laurence Philomène is challenging the lack of non-binary representation by photographing her friends as their ideal selves, set against her vivid fantasy backdrops.
Happy Intersex Awareness Day!!!! Today I’m talking all about my specific intersex variation - CAIS. Please subscribe to my channel and let me know what you think! xoxy
Saying that man and woman are the only genders is actually LESS nuanced than saying that earth, water, air, and fire are the only elements.
This is fantastic.
Then on August 5, emboldened by Jamie Shupe’s Oregon court victory, Keenan applied for a gender change.
“I identify as intersex, both as my medical reality and as my gender identification,” Keenan said. “It never occurred to me that this was an option, because I thought the gender change laws were strictly for transgender people. I decided to try and use the same framework to have a third gender.”
This was the crossword puzzle in the New York Times yesterday.
Tausig’s crossword is a so-called Schrödinger puzzle, named for the physicist’s hypothetical cat that is at once both alive and dead. In a Schrödinger puzzle, select squares have more than one correct letter answer: They exist in two states at once. “Black Halloween animal,” for example, could be both BAT or CAT, yielding two different but perfectly correct puzzles. Only 10 such puzzles have now been published in Times history.
It’s the theme of Tausig’s puzzle, though, that makes it special. Four entries in Thursday’s crossword can include either an “F” or an “M.” Both are correct; neither is wrong. For example, “Part of a house” can be either ROOF or ROOM. The long “revealer” answer, tying those select entries together and spanning 11 squares smack-dab in the middle of the puzzle, is GENDER FLUID.
This puzzle, with “M”s and “F”s that aren’t fixed, is a masterful blend of subject and structure. “It potentially really evokes what gender fluidity is, which is not moving back and forth between two poles, but actually not being committed to either pole, and potentially existing in many states at different times,” Tausig said.
This is … really cool.
Well-known on-demand music app Spotify have added a third gender option, non-binary, to their registration form for some countries.
Countries that have three options include the UK, Australia, and the US, and countries that still have only the standard M/F include Canada, Turkey, Germany, France, and the Philippines. If you’re in a different country that we’ve not mentioned, please click through to their sign-up form here and tell us in an ask which country you’re in and how many gender options they offer! We’ll edit this post to give as complete a list as possible.
This follows a support request over 3 years ago for adding more gender options, which received over 300 votes. We found that request and blogged about it, appealing to followers to add their votes and comments, and the request was reviewed by Spotify soon after. In the mean time Spotify were willing to remove the gender information from users’ accounts manually.
If you’re in a country that doesn’t have three gender options available, you can contact Spotify here or on Twitter, @SpotifyCares, to express your support for the move being expanded to more countries. There are Twitter accounts for individual countries too, for which Google or @SpotifyCares can point you in the right direction.
And if you’re in a country that does have a non-binary option now, you can contact Spotify or tweet at them to say thanks!
(Many thanks to @nonbinary for tweeting about this and getting some information about country availability.)
“When I meet up with my trans friends, what stands out is how much we laugh. It can be because of internet memes or jokes, but more often, it has to do with the practical realities of living life while trans. Writing your deed poll, a legal document that proves a change of name, on the back of an envelope (it’s legal no matter where you write it!) and then losing it when you want to show your bank … how tucking can go wrong … everything surrounding bathrooms …
This can all be funny.”
The Sims 4 Patch Adds Gender Customisation
“The update gives players more ways to reflect the world around them, or in their imaginations, creating the sims and the stories they want,” says lead producer Lyndsay Pearson. “Our players are constantly engaged in a conversation with us about The Sims, and they’re always requesting more of everything,” says Pearson. “We always have an incredibly long list of things we want to add to the game, and so much of that list comes directly from player feedback. In this case, players have been asking why certain hairstyles, clothing, and other options were limited to one gender or the other… We also saw it as an awesome chance to continue to nurture what’s always been an inclusive environment for all our players.”
Pearson says that in addition to taking feedback from fans, the development team also consulted with GLAAD on the update to ensure the changes were respectful. Pearson says that there’s likely more on the way as well. “We’re always looking for new ways to push creative boundaries for our players,” she says, “and these tools grow over time, just like the game itself.”
