February is upon us, and the picture for anti-transgender legislation
has begun to emerge. In 2015 there were 20 state-level bills intended to
target transgender people. All of them were either defeated or carried
over to the next legislative session. This year has seen the number grow
to at least 28 pieces of legislation, and we’ll likely see more before
the sessions are over. […]
While some retailers have been openly courting the gender neutral market and many elite colleges have embraced “gender neutral” bathrooms, how many employers are ready for gender fluid workers?

For transgender and gender non-conforming people like myself, the question of what to wear to work becomes an exhausting question of identity and of survival.
President Barack Obama on Monday will sign an executive order banning workplace discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender workers of federal contractors and the federal government. The executive order has two components: It prohibits federal contractors from discriminating against employees based on sexual orientation or gender identity — a move that affects 24,000 companies employing roughly 28 million workers, or about one-fifth of the nation’s workforce — and it explicitly bans discrimination against federal employees based on their gender identity.

I'm 18 years old and I need to get my first job (to transition and to move out) but I'm having trouble finding places to work. I don't have a driving license otherwise I'd take a painting job or something like that. I was wondering what places I should avoid altogether (either certain types, or specific, according to media stigma)?
unfortunately as I dont know where you live I cant really list off specific places to avoid in your area, and whether a business is trans-friendly or not often depends on the local manager, not the business as a whole.
all i can say is apply literally everywhere. everywhere. print off like 40 resumes and just start going into stores and businesses asking if they’re hiring and if not leave your resume anyway. getting a job as a trans person is a little bit like guerrilla marketing so the best thing to do is just canvas places.
alternatively, (and i’m currently doing this, although having no luck (for other circumstances that make me unemployable other than being trans)) if there is an employment resource centre in your area (in ontario it’s called “Northern Lights” but you can just google “employment resources [my area]” to see if there is one) you can go in their and meet with a counsellor who will work on finding you employment specific to your needs. I had my counsellor help me avoid fumbling over explanations around pronouns by contacting the employer first and using my correct pronouns, so it’s already put in their head what pronouns you use before you even meet them, and that’s been really helpful for me navigating interviews. employers looking to hire contact employment resource centres to fill their positions, so having a mediator like that who can gender you correctly at first and field any questions the employer has for you can be really helpful.
good luck on the job hunt!

!! OH!
Important PSA: If you are trans and need a job, Staples does not discriminate based on gender identity. I am trans, I have a job, and they allow me to put my chosen name on name tags and allow me to tell or not tell anyone. Only the managers know.
The pay is pretty good, too. I work as a Tech Sales Associate.
Good luck friends.
Wegmans is the same~ They let me use the proper bathroom, too
